The Man In The Gnome

SCENE ONE

INT. GARDEN – DAY

A quiet, meticulously cared for garden basks under a cheerful, sun-dappled sky. Birds chirping in the distance, leaves rustling gently with the wind. All seems peaceful, until the camera zooms in on a lone GARDEN GNOME, our unlikely protagonist, its cheerful painted face a stark contrast to the dark secret it holds.

CUT TO:

INT. GNOME – DAY

Inside the gnome, we find a tiny room, Spartan and suffocating. The walls seem to pulsate with a strange, otherworldly energy. In the center of the room, we see THE MAN (late 50s, worn-out, sorrowful) trapped, pacing back and forth, his movements marked by resignation and suffering.

MAN (voice-over) Trapped inside this prison, my soul yearns for freedom, for sunlight, for the breeze against my face…

CUT TO:

EXT. GARDEN – DAY

A group of playful CHILDREN storm into the garden, their laughter piercing the tranquil silence. They start a wild game of soccer, the ball ricocheting off trees and flowers, each impact a shock to the gnome and its inhabitant.

CUT TO:

INT. GNOME – DAY

Inside, each violent shake tosses the man about like a rag doll. The cramped quarters offer no room to maneuver, no refuge.

MAN (voice-over) Each jostle, each tumble, like thunder inside my porcelain prison…

CUT TO:

EXT. GARDEN – NIGHT

As the children depart, the garden falls into a soothing tranquility. The gnome, now battered and dirty, stands lonely under the cold light of the moon.

MAN (voice-over) Silence… The sweetest torment. Alone, with nothing but my thoughts and the cold whisper of the night…

FADE OUT.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN:

EXT. GARDEN – MORNING

Daybreak paints the garden in soft hues of orange and pink. A hummingbird flits by, its wings beating a hasty rhythm against the morning quiet.

CUT TO:

INT. GNOME – MORNING

The MAN, now rested, leans against the pulsating wall, staring at the ever-changing shadows created by the dawning light. His eyes, though wearied, twinkle with a hint of hope.

MAN (voice-over) The dawn… my sole window to the world. Fleeting but sweet, the muffled chirps and rustling leaves serenade my solitude…

Suddenly, a heavy THUD echoes outside.

CUT TO:

EXT. GARDEN – MORNING

A HUMAN HAND (female, delicate) sets down a NEW GNOME next to our protagonist gnome. The new figure, a female gnome with an enchanting painted smile, brings a pop of color into the scene.

CUT TO:

INT. GNOME – MORNING

The MAN stares at the shared wall, a glimmer of curiosity in his eyes.

MAN (voice-over) A neighbor… Could it be? Another soul trapped like mine, or just hollow porcelain?

He tentatively reaches out, pressing his hand against the shared wall. A beat. Then, a faint tapping echoes back.

MAN (voice-over) An echo of my suffering… or a spark of companionship in our shared plight?

FADE OUT.

SCENE THREE

FADE IN:

INT. GNOME – MORNING

The MAN, excitement lighting up his weary face, begins to tap back a rhythmic pattern, waiting for a response.

MAN (voice-over) Hope… such a cruel and exquisite poison.

His tapping continues, punctuating the silence that surrounds him. Time seems to stretch, each passing second echoing his anxious anticipation.

Suddenly, the gnome vibrates with a new rhythm – but it’s harsh, erratic, not the delicate response he hoped for.

CUT TO:

EXT. GARDEN – MORNING

A squirrel, its paws drumming on the female gnome’s head as it tries to dislodge an acorn wedged in its mouth, creates the erratic rhythm. After succeeding, it scurries off, leaving the garden once again silent.

CUT TO:

INT. GNOME – MORNING

The MAN’s hopeful face drops as the frantic beats fade. His hand drops to his side, the glimmer of hope in his eyes extinguished.

MAN (voice-over) Mistaken… The universe taunts me yet again.

His gaze drifts back to the faint light, the only indication of the world outside his ceramic cell. His solitude, now amplified by the brief flirtation with companionship, weighs even heavier.

MAN (voice-over) Alone, yet again… Trapped in a world that seems to echo with life but offers none.

FADE OUT.

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN:

EXT. GARDEN – MORNING – YEARS LATER

An overgrown garden stands as a testament to time’s relentless march. In its midst, a once vibrant gnome now faded and weathered. Inside, the MAN, visibly aged, peers out at the world with a sense of resigned acceptance.

MAN (voice-over) Trapped in this ceramic cell, time has become a relentless sculptor, etching its passing on my soul…

Suddenly, a loud CRACK breaks the eerie silence.

CUT TO:

EXT. GARDEN – MORNING

A stray football, with the force of a thousand hammers, hits the gnome, shattering it into countless shards.

CUT TO:

EXT. GARDEN – MORNING

As the porcelain shards settle, a small, shimmering figure of the MAN stands amid the wreckage. He is free but confused.

MAN (voice-over) Freedom… an intoxicating yet terrifying mistress…

Suddenly, a bird swoops down, its eyes fixated on the glowing wisp. It opens its beak, and in a swift motion, snaps him up.

CUT TO:

INT. BIRD – MORNING

The MAN, now inside the bird, experiences a new sensation: the slow, steady breakdown of his form, a strange warmth enveloping him as he begins his journey through the bird’s digestive system.

MAN (voice-over) Yet another prison… But this one is different, the process of dissolution has begun… I am unraveling, dispersing… Returning to the universe from where I came…

FADE OUT.
