Rude Garden Gnomes Attracting Throngs of Young Buyers

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – It’s the hot new thing, but the rude garden gnome is not everyone’s cup of tea.

“I wouldn’t put it in my front yard for sure,” said Natalie Schuitemaker. “But it’s pretty funny.”

ABC 4 News’ Ryan Nelson had one on his desk at work Friday. But inside some people are laughing, while others would like it to go.

“I wouldn’t put that in my front yard, that’s not the message I’d want to send out,” said Michael Higgins.

The Rude Garden Gnome is rapidly gaining popularity all across the Internet and on Facebook. But people are divided over whether they find them funny or offensive.

The pictures are satire. They come from Garden Gnome Liberation Front, which says its goal is to free garden gnomes from their boring existences.

“It’s meant to be funny,” said Joe Head, who works at Salt Lake City’s “The Garbage Patch” novelty store. “It isn’t meant to offend people.”

But offend people they do. The company’s website has been hacked and there have been a number of complaints from people saying they don’t find them funny at all.

“I just got a chuckle out of it,” said Head. “It was kind of humorous.”

According to ABC 4’s research, the rude garden gnome is mostly popular among a younger demographic. The Facebook page has 1 million likes and is rapidly growing.

But no matter why people buy them, for those who find them offensive, it’s simply not their cup of tea.”
