A tiny figure is perched outside the building in which I’m working. It looks like a garden gnome. But it can’t be, because I’ve never had a garden, and even if I did, who’d want to put this little guy in it? My first thought was that someone is playing an elaborate prank on me. But, no, this is just an everyday sight here in Southern California.
I considered that this gnome might be some kind of religious idol – one that’s part of a “bring the gods to work” party that I hadn’t been invited to. Then it struck me: He’s pretending to be a garden gnome! Just like me!
I have no idea how old he is, but there’s something about him that tells me he’ll be around for a long time. His beard gives him an air of wisdom – one that lets you know he’s the kind of guy who knows all the secrets kept by rocks, trees, and other people wearing pointy hats.
The gnome is looking at something just over my shoulder. I look back to see what he’s looking at, but there’s nothing there. He can’t be looking at me. I don’t wear a pointy hat, and I’m definitely not hiding any secrets in this shirt pocket (although it would be kind of cool if I did).
I keep looking back, waiting to see what’ll happen. Nothing happens, but it’s still more interesting than looking at a bright blue sky – especially when I feel a slight breeze blowing past me. It’s as if someone is passing by. But then I remembered that no one else was outside with me and the gnome. “Maybe he’s looking at a bird,” I thought.
But then, why do I feel like someone is standing right behind me?
